Xylitol (sugar-free gum and products)

EmergencyCall nowFood

Especially affected animals: Dog

Why it is dangerous

Xylitol is a sweetener found in sugar-free gum, candy, toothpaste, mouthwash, and some chewable vitamins. In dogs, it can dangerously lower blood sugar and cause liver damage. The drop in blood sugar can begin as early as 10–15 minutes after eating it.

Possible signs

  • Vomiting
  • Weakness
  • Staggering, loss of balance
  • Seizures

What to do

Take the product's packaging and call your veterinarian right away, and get ready to head to the clinic. Do not wait, even if there are no symptoms. Do not try to induce vomiting unless the veterinarian tells you to, and do not give anything at home.

Do not try to make your pet vomit; if needed, the vet will do it at the clinic. Bring the packaging with you.

This is general guidance and does not replace a veterinary examination. Ask your veterinarian for a plan tailored to your pet.
