Grapes and raisins

EmergencyCall nowFood

Especially affected animals: Dog, Cat

Why it is dangerous

Grapes and raisins can cause sudden kidney damage in dogs. The harmful substance is thought to be tartaric acid; it is reported that the effect is not always related to the amount, so even a small amount matters. Information for cats is limited; do not give them to your cat either.

Possible signs

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weakness
  • Passing little urine or none at all

What to do

Stay calm and remove any remaining grapes. Note how much your pet ate and the time. Call your veterinarian right away even if there are no symptoms; early intervention is important. Do not try to make your pet vomit unless the veterinarian tells you to.

This is general guidance and does not replace a veterinary examination. Ask your veterinarian for a plan tailored to your pet.
