Chocolate and cocoa

EmergencyCall nowFood

Especially affected animals: Dog, Cat

Why it is dangerous

Theobromine and caffeine (methylxanthines) in chocolate affect the heart and nervous system. Dark chocolate and cocoa powder are more dangerous; white chocolate carries the lowest risk. Some chocolate products may also contain raisins, macadamia nuts or xylitol.

Possible signs

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Restlessness and excessive activity
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Tremors
  • Seizures

What to do

Stay calm and remove any remaining chocolate from your pet's reach. Take the packaging with you; note how much was eaten and when. Call a veterinarian immediately, even if there are no symptoms. Do not try to make your pet vomit unless the veterinarian tells you to, and do not give any medication at home.

This is general guidance and does not replace a veterinary examination. Ask your veterinarian for a plan tailored to your pet.
