Apricot, peach, and cherry pits

SeriousCall us; the vet will adviseFood

Especially affected animals: Dog, Cat

Why it is dangerous

The kernels, leaves, and stems of these fruits contain compounds that can release cyanide. Because cats and dogs usually swallow pits without chewing them, the main risk is often an intestinal blockage; however, a bitter apricot kernel with a cracked shell can cause serious poisoning.

Possible signs

  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Abdominal pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Collapse
  • Seizures

What to do

Remove any remaining pits and note how many your pet swallowed. Call your veterinarian right away and explain the situation. Do not try to make your pet vomit unless the veterinarian tells you to.

This is general guidance and does not replace a veterinary examination. Ask your veterinarian for a plan tailored to your pet.
