Avocado

Especially affected animals: Bird, Rabbit, Dog, Cat
Why it is dangerous
The persin in avocado is especially dangerous for birds and rabbits; it can cause heart damage and death. In cats and dogs, the fruit itself generally does not cause serious poisoning; however, a swallowed pit can cause an intestinal blockage.
Possible signs
- Lethargy in birds and rabbits
- Difficulty breathing in birds and rabbits
- Vomiting in cats and dogs if the pit has been swallowed
- Loss of appetite
What to do
If your bird or rabbit has eaten avocado, call your veterinarian immediately without waiting for symptoms. If your cat or dog has swallowed a pit, also call right away and explain the situation; vomiting and loss of appetite can be signs of a blockage. Do not try to induce vomiting unless your veterinarian tells you to.
Do not try to make your pet vomit; if needed, the vet will do it at the clinic. Bring the packaging with you.
