Especially affected animals: Dog, Cat

Why it is dangerous

Cats and dogs are more sensitive to caffeine than humans are. Licking coffee, tea or cola once or twice usually does not cause poisoning; however, coffee beans, unused ground coffee, tea bags, energy drinks or caffeine supplements can cause serious poisoning.

Possible signs

  • Restlessness, excessive activity
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Drooling
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Tremors
  • Seizures

What to do

Take the product's packaging and note how much your pet ate. Call your veterinarian immediately; if your pet ate a supplement or beans, do not wait for symptoms. Do not try to make your pet vomit unless the veterinarian tells you to.

This is general guidance and does not replace a veterinary examination. Ask your veterinarian for a plan tailored to your pet.
