Raw yeast dough

EmergencyCall nowFood

Especially affected animals: Dog, Cat

Why it is dangerous

Uncooked yeast dough keeps rising in the warm environment of the stomach and can cause the stomach to become severely distended; less commonly, gastric torsion (bloat with twisting of the stomach) can develop. Yeast also produces alcohol and can cause alcohol poisoning.

Possible signs

  • Swollen abdomen
  • Unproductive attempts to vomit (retching)
  • Vomiting
  • Staggering
  • Weakness
  • Clouded consciousness

What to do

Remove any remaining dough. Call a veterinarian immediately; if there is abdominal swelling or unproductive retching, set off without waiting. Do not try to induce vomiting unless the veterinarian tells you to.

Do not try to make your pet vomit; if needed, the vet will do it at the clinic. Bring the packaging with you.

This is general guidance and does not replace a veterinary examination. Ask your veterinarian for a plan tailored to your pet.
