Especially affected animals: Cat, Dog

Why it is dangerous

Plants in the onion family (Allium) can irritate the digestive system and damage red blood cells, leading to anemia. Cats are more sensitive; Japanese dog breeds such as the Akita and Shiba Inu have also been reported to be more sensitive.

Possible signs

  • Nausea and drooling
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Lethargy
  • Pale gums
  • Rapid breathing

What to do

Remove any leftover food and note how much was eaten. Call your veterinarian right away and explain the situation; the veterinarian will decide when your pet needs to be examined. Do not try to make your pet vomit unless your veterinarian tells you to.

This is general guidance and does not replace a veterinary examination. Ask your veterinarian for a plan tailored to your pet.
