Why it is dangerous

Macadamia nuts can cause lethargy, tremors, and weakness in the hind legs in dogs. Symptoms usually begin within 12 hours. If the product is coated in chocolate, chocolate poisoning may also be a concern.

  • Marked lethargy
  • Vomiting
  • Tremors
  • Increased body temperature
  • Weakness in the hind legs, inability to walk
  • Stiffness in the joints

What to do

Take the packaging and note how much your dog ate. Call a veterinarian immediately and explain the situation. Do not try to induce vomiting unless the veterinarian tells you to.

Do not try to make your pet vomit; if needed, the vet will do it at the clinic. Bring the packaging with you.

This is general guidance and does not replace a veterinary examination. Ask your veterinarian for a plan tailored to your pet.
