Fumes from overheated non-stick pans (for birds)

EmergencyCall nowHousehold

Especially affected animals: Bird

Why it is dangerous

When pans, pots, ovens, or heat lamps/bulbs with a non-stick coating (PTFE, Teflon) overheat, the gases they release cause serious damage to birds' lungs. Symptoms can progress very quickly; affected birds can sometimes be found dead without any signs having been noticed.

Possible signs

  • Labored breathing
  • Wheezing
  • Open-mouth breathing
  • Weakness, lethargy
  • Restlessness

What to do

Turn off the stove, move the bird to another well-ventilated, smoke-free room, and call a veterinarian immediately. Keep the bird calm during this time and do not handle it more than necessary.

Do not try to make your pet vomit; if needed, the vet will do it at the clinic. Bring the packaging with you.

This is general guidance and does not replace a veterinary examination. Ask your veterinarian for a plan tailored to your pet.
