Batteries and button batteries

EmergencyCall nowHousehold

Especially affected animals: Dog, Cat

Why it is dangerous

Alkaline or acidic material leaking from punctured or chewed batteries can cause burns in the mouth and digestive tract. Button and lithium batteries can also cause burns in the esophagus and intestines through electrical current. Wounds in the mouth may appear hours later.

Possible signs

  • Drooling
  • Mouth pain
  • Pawing at the mouth
  • Vomiting

What to do

Do not try to make your pet vomit; the battery contents can damage the esophagus again. Call your veterinarian immediately and bring the packaging showing the type of battery, or a sample of the same battery, with you.

This is general guidance and does not replace a veterinary examination. Ask your veterinarian for a plan tailored to your pet.
