Especially affected animals: Dog, Cat

Why it is dangerous

Bleach is a basic (alkaline) cleaning product. It can cause damage ranging from mild irritation to serious injuries in the mouth, esophagus, skin and eyes. The severity of the effect depends on the concentration of the product and the length of contact; injuries may become apparent late.

Possible signs

  • Drooling
  • Vomiting
  • Redness or sores in the mouth
  • Redness and watering of the eyes
  • Redness of the skin

What to do

Do not try to make your pet vomit; the corrosive substance can damage the esophagus again on its way back up. Take the product's container and call your veterinarian immediately. If it has gotten on the eyes or skin, the veterinarian may ask you to rinse the area with tap water before you set out.

This is general guidance and does not replace a veterinary examination. Ask your veterinarian for a plan tailored to your pet.
