Dog-specific flea and tick medications (permethrin in cats)
Especially affected animals: Cat
Why it is dangerous
Some flea and tick products made for dogs contain pyrethroids such as permethrin, and the concentration in these products is higher. Because cats have difficulty clearing these substances from their bodies, severe poisoning can occur when a dog product is applied to a cat. Signs may begin within minutes or may be delayed for up to 72 hours. Poisoning can also occur in a cat that licks a recently treated dog or has close contact with it.
Possible signs
- Excessive drooling
- Twitching and tremors
- Dilated pupils
- Restlessness
- Seizures
- Difficulty breathing
What to do
Take the product's box and call your veterinarian immediately. Before you set out, the veterinarian can tell you over the phone how to remove the product from the fur; do not give any medication on your own. Use only products made for cats and recommended by your veterinarian on your cat. If you have applied such a product to your dog, keep your cat separated from the dog until the product has dried.
Do not try to make your pet vomit; if needed, the vet will do it at the clinic. Bring the packaging with you.
