Fertilizers

Especially affected animals: Dog, Cat

Why it is dangerous

A small amount of fertilizer usually causes mild stomach irritation; a large amount, however, can lead to severe poisoning due to iron and other chemicals. Bone meal and blood meal can clump together in the stomach and cause a blockage or inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis). Some fertilizers also contain added insect and weed killers.

Possible signs

  • Drooling
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Hunched posture due to abdominal pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Muddy-colored gums

What to do

Take the product's bag with you (the ingredient information is important) and call your veterinarian right away to explain the situation; the veterinarian will tell you whether an examination is needed. Do not try to make your pet vomit unless the veterinarian tells you to.

This is general guidance and does not replace a veterinary examination. Ask your veterinarian for a plan tailored to your pet.
