Why it is dangerous
Drain openers, oven cleaners, hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid), rust removers and some toilet bowl cleaners contain strong acids or bases. They can cause serious chemical burns in the mouth, esophagus, stomach, skin, eyes and airways; injuries may become apparent only later.
Possible signs
- Drooling
- Sores or burns in the mouth
- Vomiting
- Difficulty breathing
- Redness and pain in the eyes
What to do
Do not try to make your pet vomit; the caustic substance can damage the esophagus again on its way back up. Take the product's container and call your veterinarian immediately. If the substance has gotten on the eyes or skin, the veterinarian may ask you to rinse the area with tap water before you set out.
