Yew (Taxus)

EmergencyCall nowPlant

Especially affected animals: Dog, Cat

Why it is dangerous

All parts of the yew tree contain highly toxic compounds called taxines. Although the fleshy part of the red berry is not poisonous, the seed inside is highly toxic, so eating the berry is also dangerous. It can slow the heart rate and breathing.

Possible signs

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Excessive drooling
  • Slow heart rate
  • Slow breathing
  • Seizures

What to do

Remove the plant and take a photo of it. Call your veterinarian right away, even if there are no symptoms. Do not try to make your pet vomit unless your veterinarian tells you to.

This is general guidance and does not replace a veterinary examination. Ask your veterinarian for a plan tailored to your pet.
