Dieffenbachia
CautionAsk your vetPlant
Especially affected animals: Dog, Cat
Why it is dangerous
When dieffenbachia is chewed, the microscopic crystals in the plant irritate the mouth, lips, and throat. In most cases, symptoms are limited to the mouth; rarely, there may be swelling in the throat severe enough to make breathing difficult.
Possible signs
- Excessive drooling
- Pain in the mouth and lips
- Retching
- Vomiting
What to do
Remove the plant, have its name or a photo ready, and call a veterinarian right away to explain the situation. If there is difficulty breathing or swelling of the face or throat, leave immediately without waiting. Do not try to make your pet vomit unless the veterinarian tells you to.
