Psoriasis creams (calcipotriol, a vitamin D derivative)

EmergencyCall nowMedicine

Especially affected animals: Dog, Cat

Why it is dangerous

Some creams used to treat psoriasis (sedef) contain calcipotriol, a vitamin D derivative. Even a single lick or chewing on the tube can raise blood calcium levels to dangerous levels and may lead to kidney failure.

Possible signs

  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Lethargy
  • Excessive drinking and frequent urination

What to do

Take the tube or container and call your veterinarian immediately, without waiting for symptoms. Do not try to induce vomiting unless the veterinarian tells you to. Do not let your pet lick the skin of a person who has applied the cream.

Do not try to make your pet vomit; if needed, the vet will do it at the clinic. Bring the packaging with you.

This is general guidance and does not replace a veterinary examination. Ask your veterinarian for a plan tailored to your pet.
