Especially affected animals: Dog, Cat

Why it is dangerous

According to US data, antidepressants are among the most common causes of accidental poisoning in pets. Antidepressants and medications containing amphetamine can affect the nervous system, the heart and body temperature; depending on the amount and the animal's health condition, signs ranging from mild to severe may be seen.

Possible signs

  • Restlessness, agitation
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Drooling
  • Tremors
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Excessive rise in body temperature

What to do

Take the medication box, check how many tablets are missing, and call your veterinarian immediately without waiting for signs to appear. Do not try to induce vomiting unless the veterinarian tells you to. Pick up any tablets that fall on the floor right away and store medications in a closed cabinet.

Do not try to make your pet vomit; if needed, the vet will do it at the clinic. Bring the packaging with you.

This is general guidance and does not replace a veterinary examination. Ask your veterinarian for a plan tailored to your pet.
