Poinsettia (Atatürk flower)

CautionAsk your vetPlant

Especially affected animals: Dog, Cat

Why it is dangerous

The milky white sap of the poinsettia irritates the mouth and stomach. It is considered mildly toxic to cats and dogs; symptoms usually go away on their own.

Possible signs

  • Drooling
  • Lip licking
  • Vomiting
  • Rarely diarrhea
  • Redness and itching on skin the sap has touched

What to do

Remove the plant and call a veterinarian right away to explain the situation; the veterinarian will tell you whether an examination is needed. If vomiting continues or the sap has gotten into the eyes, bring your pet in for an examination. Do not try to induce vomiting or give any medication unless the veterinarian tells you to.

Do not try to make your pet vomit; if needed, the vet will do it at the clinic. Bring the packaging with you.

This is general guidance and does not replace a veterinary examination. Ask your veterinarian for a plan tailored to your pet.
