Peace lily (Spathiphyllum)

CautionAsk your vetPlant

Especially affected animals: Dog, Cat

Why it is dangerous

The peace lily is not a true lily and does not cause kidney damage in cats. When chewed, the microscopic crystals inside irritate the mouth and throat; in rare cases, swelling of the throat can occur.

Possible signs

  • Excessive drooling
  • Pain in the mouth and lips
  • Retching
  • Vomiting

What to do

Remove the plant and call a veterinarian right away to explain the situation. If there is difficulty breathing or swelling of the face or throat, set out immediately without waiting. Do not try to induce vomiting unless the veterinarian tells you to.

Do not try to make your pet vomit; if needed, the vet will do it at the clinic. Bring the packaging with you.

This is general guidance and does not replace a veterinary examination. Ask your veterinarian for a plan tailored to your pet.
