EmergencyCall nowPlant
Especially affected animals: Dog, Cat
Why it is dangerous
All parts of the oleander, including the leaves, flowers and stems, contain oleandrin (a cardiac glycoside), which affects the heart. It can cause dangerous disturbances in heart rhythm; signs may be delayed and may begin first with digestive signs such as vomiting. It is widely used as an ornamental plant in gardens and along roadsides.
Possible signs
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Irregular heartbeat
- Weakness
- Collapse
What to do
Remove the plant and take a photo of it. Call your veterinarian immediately, even if there are no signs. Do not try to induce vomiting unless the veterinarian tells you to.
Do not try to make your pet vomit; if needed, the vet will do it at the clinic. Bring the packaging with you.
