Wild mushrooms

EmergencyCall nowOther

Especially affected animals: Dog, Cat

Why it is dangerous

It is very hard to tell whether mushrooms growing in gardens and parks are poisonous just by looking at them, so any wild mushroom that has been eaten should be treated as poisonous. Some species can cause liver or kidney failure, and symptoms may be delayed for up to 24 hours.

Possible signs

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Staggering
  • Tremors
  • Seizures
  • Black, tar-like stool

What to do

Call your veterinarian right away, even if there are no symptoms. If possible, using gloves, wrap a sample of the mushroom in paper or take a photo of it; this can help identify the species. Do not try to make your pet vomit unless the veterinarian tells you to.

This is general guidance and does not replace a veterinary examination. Ask your veterinarian for a plan tailored to your pet.
