String, thread, yarn and dental floss
Especially affected animals: Cat, Dog
Why it is dangerous
Long, thin objects like string are not toxic, but when swallowed, one end can get caught under the tongue or in the stomach. The intestine bunches up along the string, and the intestinal wall can tear. This is common in cats during play; if the thread has a needle attached, a puncture injury can also occur.
Possible signs
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Lethargy
- Abdominal pain
- String visible under the tongue or at the anus
What to do
Do not pull on string hanging from the mouth or anus; it can damage the internal organs. Keep your pet calm and call your veterinarian immediately. Even if there are no symptoms, an examination is necessary if you think your pet has swallowed string. Do not try to induce vomiting unless your veterinarian tells you to.
Do not try to make your pet vomit; if needed, the vet will do it at the clinic. Bring the packaging with you.
